Nigerian Meat Pies
Pasties ain't got nothing on these Nigerian meat pies!
Supplies
- Pastry:
- 400 grams plain flour
- 200 grams unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- Salt
- Smoked paprika
- Water
- Filling:
- 300 grams mince meat
- 1 diced potato
- 1 diced onions
- 2 diced garlic cloves
- Salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 beef stock cubes
- Thyme (optional)
- 1 beaten egg
- Splash of cold milk
Steps
- Mix in your butter turmeric, flour, and salt together. It should get to a crumble looking consistency.
- Add water gradually and keep kneading until you can roll out, or it can be rolled into a ball.
- Cover with film and store in the fridge, until your are ready to use it.
- Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees.
- Start with the potatoes and onions and garlic. brown in a pan with some oil. once they have started cooking through, add the mince. Brown your mince and add the flavourings - salt and pepper, turmeric, beef stock cube and thyme.
- Leave to cool slightly.
- Take out your pastry and roll flat on a lightly floured surface, add your filing and bunch up. To get the typical meat pie shape, you simply have to use a fork and press it down on the edges.
- Before you put your pie in the oven, simply use a pastry brush and cover your pie in an even coat.
- Cook for about 20-30 minutes, until golden brown.
